Two Indications That It’s Time to Rent a Storage Unit
Here are two indications that it is probably time for you to rent a storage unit.
Your spare rooms and garage are so full that they've become hazardous
Many people with surplus items in their homes resort to stuffing these things into their spare rooms and their garages. If you have done this and the items in these areas have accumulated to such an extent that these rooms have now become hazardous, then it's probably sensible to rent a storage unit to put them.
For example, if your garage is attached to your house, then it could be a life-saving escape route if a fire ever occurs in your home. However, if it is filled to its rafters with boxes, then you might be unable to get out of your home via this area if a fire occurs and in fact, trying to run out of the building through the garage could be dangerous, as boxes could fall on you and trap you.
Likewise, if your spare room is completely full to the point where you cannot use it for anything other than storage, then there is a chance that you won't notice if, for example, the walls get damp and mouldy (which could lead to your items being damaged and mould spores spreading around your home).
By keeping these extra things in a unit, you'll not only have more free space in your home but will find it easier to get out if a fire ever occurs in one of these areas and will be better able to spot any issues in these rooms that could damage your home or harm your health.
You're regularly damaging items because you have nowhere safe to store them
If you find that you are breaking, knocking over or accidentally stepping on many of your belongings on a regular basis because you have nowhere safe to store them, then now would be a good time to hire a unit.
The cost of replacing, fixing or disposing of damaged items on a regular basis is likely to be more costly (not to mention more stressful) than keeping them safely stored in a unit (where you'll only need to pay a modest weekly or monthly fee). Furthermore, you will no longer find yourself stubbing your toes and bumping your elbows on or against the excess items for which there is no room in your home.
